Submarine and Undersea Technology - Areas of Research and Development

MPI/Getty Images
Submarine command teams – now and increasingly in the future - are facing an increasing challenge of manipulating escalating amounts of data and information as crew numbers are set to decrease and whilst submarine related detection / counter-detection organic and networked sources are exponentially expanding. In these high-pressure environments, understanding and optimising how information is acquired, filtered, fused distributed and is presented/displayed is critical; particularly under conditions of hostility when employing weapons.
Critical to all submarine operations is an accurate knowledge of the geographical position of the submarine on the surface of the earth. Advances in this area are the subject of the first discussion below. It is of note that the execution of an engagement with an adversarial platform requires an accurate tactical picture relative to the target which relies on own-ship sensors, weapons, systems processing, together with an expanding knowledge of the underwater oceanographic and hydrographic operating environment.. These are areas which will be rapidly enhanced by the development afforded via quantum computing and AI.
There follows a number of observations / technical extracts which examine areas applicable to future submarine system technical developments.
